Built for everyone
— including everyone we hire.
DocuShred is a workforce program of The Arc of Hilo. Our entire reason for existing is to create real, dignified work for adults with disabilities. The same principle applies to this website: it should work for everyone, in every way they use the web.
Our commitment
We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA across every page, and we treat accessibility as a launch requirement — not a follow-on task. If something on this site doesn't work for you, we want to hear about it and we'll fix it.
What we've done
- Semantic landmarks (
<header>,<nav>,<main>,<footer>) on every page so screen readers can navigate by region. - A skip-to-content link as the first focusable element so keyboard users can bypass the navigation.
- Single, unambiguous
<h1>per page and a clean heading hierarchy with no skipped levels. - Visible focus indicators (3px coral outline) on every interactive element.
- Color contrast meeting WCAG AA on text — no
color-only meaning. - Keyboard-operable forms with explicit
<label>s and grouped fieldsets. - Meaningful
alttext on content images, emptyalt=""on decorative ones. - Motion respects
prefers-reduced-motion— animations disable cleanly when that's set. - Structured data (HIPAA, FAQ, Service, Article) so AI assistants and search engines can understand and surface the content.
Plain-language alternatives
Compliance documents (HIPAA, FINRA, BAA) are written in legal language because they have to be. If you'd find a plain-language summary helpful — for yourself, for staff, or for a family member you're handling paperwork for — call us and we will walk through what we shred, how, and why, in everyday terms. No fee.
If the website isn't working for you
The fastest way to reach us is the phone. A real person answers during business hours, and we return voicemails the same day.

Known issues
We don't currently have any known WCAG AA failures. If you find one, please report it using any of the contacts above and we will fix it within one business week. If you need accessible alternatives to specific content (large-print PDFs of pricing, an audio walk-through of compliance, etc.) — just ask. We'll make it.
Standards we follow
- WCAG 2.1 Level AA for the website
- Section 508 for any federal-facing materials
- HIPAA Privacy Rule for content handling and data flow
- Plain Language Act principles for customer-facing copy where the law allows
